Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how Onit, Inc. (“Onit,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our applications, software, websites, and related services (collectively, the “Services”).

We are committed to ensuring that your data stays private and that you retain control. Onit is built on the principle that what happens on your device stays on your device—unless you explicitly choose otherwise.

Onit, Inc. is headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States.

1. Overview

At Onit, privacy is not just a feature — it’s foundational. Our guiding privacy principles:

  • You own your data. We never sell or share your personal information.

  • We minimize what we collect. We only collect what's necessary to provide and improve the Services.

  • You stay in control. Features like AutoContext and analytics are opt-in or easy to disable.

  • You can use Onit entirely offline. With Local Mode, none of your data is sent anywhere — ever.

2. Information We Collect

We categorize the data we collect into two types: Personal Data and Usage Data.

A. Personal Data

We only collect Personal Data that you voluntarily provide to us, such as:

  • Email address, if you sign in or subscribe to updates.

  • Support communications, when you contact us via email or feedback forms.

We do not collect:

  • Your prompts

  • AutoContext contents

  • Foreground window content

  • Clipboard data

  • Files or screenshots

Onit does not record, store, or transmit your conversations or prompt history by default.

B. Usage Data

To improve Onit, we may collect limited, anonymous usage metrics such as:

  • Feature usage frequency (e.g., how often you use AutoContext or Local Mode)

  • Application performance (e.g., crash logs, startup times)

  • Platform type (e.g., macOS version)

This data is anonymized, does not include your prompts or context, and is only used to improve our Services.

You can opt out of analytics at any time in Onit’s settings.

3. AutoContext

AutoContext is an optional feature that captures relevant text from your active window to help Onit generate better responses.

  • AutoContext is disabled by default and must be explicitly enabled.

  • When enabled, AutoContext uses the macOS screen reader API to access only the visible text in the foreground window.

  • This data is only included in a prompt if you submit it — you can remove or edit it before sending.

  • In Local Mode, AutoContext never sends data off-device, even if enabled.

We do not store or transmit AutoContext data unless you explicitly include it in a prompt.

4. Local Mode

Onit includes a Local Mode feature that allows all AI interactions to run locally on your device using local models such as LLaMA 3.

When Local Mode is enabled:

  • Prompts, context, and responses are processed entirely on-device by default.

  • No data is sent to remote model providers or external APIs unless you explicitly enable additional features.

  • Features such as web search are optional and must be actively enabled. If used, your query will be sent to your selected web search provider's servers to return relevant web results.

  • You will always see and confirm the final prompt before submission — whether it includes local context or web data.

Important to note

When using Local Mode without web search, nothing ever leaves your device.
When using web search in Local Mode, your query will be sent to a web search provider (such as Tavily) for processing.

This hybrid design gives you control over what is sent, and ensures local privacy by default.

5. How We Use Your Information

We use the limited data we collect for the following purposes:

  • To operate, maintain, and improve the Services

  • To respond to your inquiries and provide support

  • To troubleshoot performance issues and bugs

  • To analyze aggregate usage trends (if analytics is enabled)

We never use your data to train machine learning models or share with third parties.

6. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes. We may share anonymized, aggregate usage metrics with service providers who help us improve Onit’s infrastructure — but only under strict data protection agreements and never including your prompts or personal information.

Your data is only shared with model providers and web search providers to provide core functionalities.

  • Model providers: When using cloud-based models, your prompts and relevant context may be sent to providers like OpenAI or Anthropic to generate responses.

  • Web search providers: If you enable web search—whether in remote or local mode—your query will be sent to a web search provider (such as Tavily) to return web-based information. This only occurs when web features are actively turned on.

7. Your Choices & Controls

You are in control of your data:

  • AutoContext: Fully optional, and editable before each prompt.

  • Local Mode: Prevents any data from leaving your device.

  • Prompt history: Stored locally; you can delete it at any time.

  • Analytics (anonymized): Opt out in settings.

  • All Context: Only included in prompts if you link them; never auto-sent.

8. Data Retention

We retain only minimal, non-personal data (e.g., anonymized logs) for as long as necessary to operate the Services. Local data such as your prompt history, or settings is stored on your device only, and under your control.

9. Security

We use technical and organizational measures to safeguard your information:

  • On-device data is sandboxed and encrypted when appropriate.

  • Data transmitted to model providers (when not in Local Mode) is sent over secure, encrypted HTTPS connections.

  • We only use reputable third-party services with strict privacy controls.

10. Children’s Privacy

Onit is not intended for individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect Personal Data from children under 13. If we become aware of such data, we delete it immediately.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post any adjustments to the Privacy Policy on this page, and the revised version will be effective when it is posted. If we materially change the ways in which we use or share personal information previously collected from you through the Services, we will notify you through the Services, by email, or by other communication.
